Yatra of Manimahesh It is believed that Lord Shiva resides in the Himalayas, and many summits across the massive mountain range named Kailash are revered as the location of the Lord’s abode. Among these is the majestic Manimahesh Kailash peak, which rises to a height of 5656 metres in the Bharmaur highlands of Chamba. A turquoise lake with purportedly healing waters lies at the base of the summit. During August and September, thousands of pilgrims travel to Manimahesh Lake (4190 meters) to pay their respects and rejoice being in a sacred setting, following the summer’s snowmelt which creates a hiking path to the lake.
“The jewel of Lord Shiva” is Manimahesh. When the sun reaches its zenith on the day of the ceremonial bathing, believers are mesmerised by a stunning spectacle that unfolds before them beneath a clear sky. Suddenly, the big mountain is lit up, resembling a single, massive diamond. This uncommon sight is the source of many stories, as well as the name “Mani.” After spending the night close to the lake, pilgrims try to swim in the sacred lake early on the 15th day of Janamashtmi. No one attempts to climb the mountain in order to preserve its holiness.
