Today marks the most significant day of our journey, as we head toward the holy Lake Manasarovar and Mt. Kailash, our ultimate destination. We will begin our journey as early as 6:00 am to ensure we reach Lake Manasarovar by early afternoon, allowing us to bathe under the warm sun before the cooler winds pick up later in the day.
On our way, we will cross Mayum-La Pass, the highest motorable pass of the journey at 5,200 meters, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, remote villages, yak herders, and flowing rivers. Along the route, we will also go through checkpoint formalities at Mayum-La and Manasarovar, so some time will be allocated for these procedures.
Lunch will be served near the Horchu River, just before crossing Mayum-La Pass. On a clear day, you may be fortunate enough to get your first darshan of Mt. Kailash from the Manasarovar base camp. At this point, we will switch vehicles to continue into the Kailash region. While waiting for the bus, the time can be spent in prayer and enjoying the darshan of both Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.
If weather and time permit, you will be given approximately 30 minutes to take a holy dip in Lake Manasarovar at a safe and suitable shore. Following this, we will perform about 70% of the parikrama (circumambulation) of Lake Manasarovar by vehicle. Along the way, you’ll also see Rakshas Tal, the crescent moon-shaped freshwater lake created by King Ravana, also known as the demon lake.
We will end the day with dinner and an overnight stay at a guesthouse near the shores of Lake Manasarovar, in the Chiu Gompa camp.
Overnight stay: Guesthouse (dormitory rooms)
Distance: Saga to Lake Manasarovar – 510 km (approximately 9 hours of driving)
Today, you will have ample time for Puja, Hawan, and a holy bath in Lake Manasarovar, the sacred lake believed to have been created by Brahma in his mind. Breakfast will be served at the usual time. For those interested, there is an opportunity to hike up to Chiu Gompa, a monastery perched on a hill near the camp.
For lunch, our cook will make an extra effort to prepare a more varied menu to bring a sense of delight to the day. After lunch, we will drive to Darchen, the base camp of Mt. Kailash, where we will spend the night in preparation for the upcoming trek around Mt. Kailash.
Along the way, you will once again witness the stunning snow-capped Gurla Mandata mountain range and the serene beauty of Rakshas Tal. In the late afternoon, you can explore the small market in Darchen town.
Overnight stay: Hotel (rooms on triple sharing basis)
Distance: Manasarovar to Darchen – 40 km (approximately 1 hour)
After breakfast, we will drive to Sherson near Yama Dwar. From Yama Dwar, trekkers will begin their journey toward Diraphuk, where the north face of Mt. Kailash awaits. At Yama Dwar, pilgrims will be blessed with an incredible view of the south face of Mt. Kailash.
Those unable to undertake the Kora (circumambulation) of Mt. Kailash can offer prayers at Yama Dwar, performing three symbolic circular parikramas in honor of Lord Shiva and Parvati before returning to Darchen. They will remain in Darchen until the trekkers return on the third day.
For those trekking, the Kora begins from Yama Dwar after Darshan of Mt. Kailash. The trek can be done either on foot or by riding a horse (pre-booked). Horse riders will select their horse and horseman by picking up a coupon, which must be kept safe until the service concludes.
Today's trek is relatively moderate, with flat trails and a gradual ascent alongside the Glacier River. Midway, we will take a short break at a tea shop to have a packed lunch before continuing with a slight uphill trek to the Diraphuk camp. The trek offers breathtaking views, including a magnificent glimpse of the north face of Mt. Kailash.
For trekkers who arrive early and are physically fit, there may be an opportunity to hike further uphill to Charan Sparsh, depending on permission from the local army authorities.

Distances:
Darchen to Yama Dwar – 11 km (30 minutes drive)
Yama Dwar to Diraphuk – 14 km (approximately 5 hours trek)
Today marks the most challenging day of the Parikrama. You will need to wake up at 4:00 am and begin the trek by 5:00 am, ensuring you carry your packed lunch. The day starts with a steep uphill climb toward Dolma-La Pass, the highest point of the trek at 5,600 meters, which will take about 4–5 hours.
At Dolma-La, you will find Shivasthal, a sacred site adorned with colorful prayer flags and offerings from pilgrims, including clothing and ornaments. From there, you will begin a steep descent to the valley on the other side of the pass.
On the way down, you will catch a glimpse of the stunning holy lake, Gauri Kunda, situated beneath the hill on your right. After descending further, you will cross a short glacier path before reaching a tea shop in the plain valley, where you can pause for a lunch break.
The rest of the journey follows a relatively flat trail, but the repetitive landscape and long trek can feel tiring. The final stretch runs along the riverbank, leading to Zuthulphuk. Highlights of the day include the sacred sites of Shivasthal, Dolma-La Pass, and Gauri Kunda.
