Indo Nepal Holidays introduced a more comfortable and shorter route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 1994, with an innovative approach that has since gained widespread acclaim. This was a joint venture with Nepal’s Asian Airlines, utilizing their MI17 helicopters to fly from Nepalgunj to Hilsa, which is just a 1-hour drive from the Tibet border at Purang (Taklakot).
This pioneering tour made a huge impact on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, establishing Indo Nepal Holidays as the #LEADERS IN NEPAL TOURS and #PIONEERS IN KAILASH MANSAROVAR YATRAS#. The use of MI17 helicopters made the journey much more comfortable, shorter, and safer, allowing even senior citizens to travel easily. Although there was no proper airport or helipad at the time, the growing popularity of the route led to more local job opportunities, and the Nepalese government eventually developed a small airport in Simikot and a helipad at Hilsa.
The helicopter route remains highly recommended due to its safety, comfort, and ease. You can start the tour from Kathmandu, combining it with a visit to Pashupati Darshan, or, for those with limited time, you can also opt for the route via Lucknow. The trip typically lasts 11 days from Kathmandu, but traveling via Lucknow can shorten it by 2 days.
The ideal time to undertake this journey is between mid-May and the end of June, or from mid-August to the end of September. During these periods, the weather is generally stable in the high mountain regions of western Nepal, with less rainfall and fewer clouds.

Arrive Lucknow and Drive to to Nepalgunj (5 hrs) and rest in hotel with brief program in the evening by our tour manager.
In the early morning, you will be transferred to the airport, which is just a 10-minute drive from your hotel, for your flight to Simikot. Simikot is a small, weather-dependent airport, so flights on smaller aircraft like the Dornier or Twin Otter are available only in the early morning. The flight duration is about one hour.
From Simikot, you will take a helicopter to Hilsa, a border town in Nepal, which takes approximately 20 minutes. Upon arrival in Hilsa, there may be a brief wait for our Chinese guide to meet you. While we strive to minimize waiting time, please be aware that delays of a few hours may occur.
It’s important to note that this border is not officially open for trade, so certain travel restrictions and regulations apply. To travel to Purang (Taklakot), a military escort is required, which may take some extra time to arrange. Delays in crossing the border are possible, and we kindly ask for your patience as we ensure that everything is properly organized.
You will spend the night in a hotel in Taklakot.(Triple sharing)
